I think I actually have the 1971 edition, but either way, this is the most beautifully detailed book I have ever read about sewing, and contains a ton of things I would never have been able to extract from modern patterns. Even the modern books like the Flesch and Palmer books don't have the crazy nitpicky details that make sense like this one.

Like did you know that clothing used to have a top fabric, interfacing, underlining, and lining? I didn't, but I do now. I have just been eating this up b

Like did you know that clothing used to have a top fabric, interfacing, underlining, and lining? I didn't, but I do now. I have just been eating this up because the things I am learning make the gaps in my sewing knowledge obvious. I think it would be overwhelming for a newbie dressmaker, but for someone with a few years of experience, it's amazing.

I finally finished this, and I feel like I have a much better grasp on the "expected knowledge" of sewing. It gives me the vocabulary to talk about questions I have.

Read if: You are interested in vintage sewing, or in sewing fitted garments.

Skip if: You are a drape artist, or you want something more about modern styles and embellishments.

This looks to be the first "version" of this book that was later transformed into one of the infamous three-ring binder Better Homes & Gardens volumes. A really sweet sewing book with excellent instructions and illustrations, not to mention fabulous 60's illustrations. Great inclusions like a Fabric Dictionary including color fabric swatches on page 25, how to read a pattern envelope on page 18, and a whole chapter dedicated to "Professional sewing tricks". I love vintage books, and I look for them everywhere I go. This one I love! I love the 60's photos and drawings.

This book starts out with the basics, so if you are a beginner, you can learn a lot from this book. Detailed instructions, many with illustrations go from the basics to furniture.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

Great reference for any hobbyist. The references to women, their needs, and their desires are a little outdated, but the technical information is great. It's a reference for the basics and necessities, so really good for anyone.

The copy I own I bought in 1963. This is the book I learned to sew from. I still have it and it is now falling apart! The 1962 edition is probably not the same edition on the present market but I found it the simplest one to use to learn to sew.

I have the 2nd Edition, 4th Printing 3 ring binder edition. It was printed in 1970, about the time i learned to sew from my mother.
